The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mrs. Maria Oligbi-Edeko (PDP – Esan North East II), has resigned from her position following the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) loss of majority status in the Assembly.
Oligbi-Edeko, who was elected as Deputy Speaker of the 8th Assembly on June 16, 2023, announced her resignation, citing the need to uphold justice, fairness, and equity for all constituencies.
In her resignation speech, she expressed gratitude to PDP leaders and members for the opportunity to represent her constituency, pledging to continue her service to the people.
Lawmakers took turns to commend Oligbi-Edeko for her commitment to public service, integrity, and impactful contributions to the legislative process during her tenure. Many described her as a dedicated leader whose influence would be missed in the Assembly.
Following her resignation, Mr. Osamwonyi Atu (APC – Orhionmwon East) was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
In a show of solidarity, the Majority Leader, Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC – Esan West), moved a motion for Oligbi-Edeko to receive all entitlements due to the office of the Deputy Speaker. The motion, seconded by Minority Leader Charity Airobarueghian (PDP – Ovia North East I), received full support from the House.
