The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has announced plans by the FCT Administration (FCTA) to establish new bus terminals in Bwari and Gwagwalada Area Councils. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance transportation safety and curb the menace of “One-Chance” operations in Abuja.
Barrister Wike made the announcement on Saturday, May 17, 2025, during an inspection tour of major infrastructure projects in the FCT. The projects included the renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC) and upgrades to the Ushafa, War College, and Army Checkpoint roads in Bwari Area Council.
A statement issued by Rabi Musa Umar, Assistant Director of Press at the Office of the Honourable Minister, confirmed the development.
Speaking to journalists after the tour, Wike explained that the new bus terminals in Bwari and Gwagwalada would complement existing ones in the city centre, providing residents with safer and more organized travel options.
“We have agreed to establish a bus terminal each in Gwagwalada and Bwari. This will ensure that people can safely travel from these areas to various parts of the city, including Mabushi, Kugbo, and the Central Business District. By creating these designated terminals, we aim to eliminate the problem of ‘One-Chance’ and enhance commuter safety,” he stated.
The Minister also reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to bridging infrastructural gaps in the FCT, highlighting that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda prioritizes both the city centre and satellite communities.
“The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is particularly focused on developing the satellite towns,” Wike noted, emphasizing that rural transformation is a cornerstone of the administration’s development strategy.
He pointed to ongoing projects like the 12-kilometre road linking the entire Ushafa area and the dualization of the Kuje-Gwagwalada road as evidence of the administration’s commitment to improving connectivity and infrastructure.
Wike further highlighted the upgrade of the International Conference Centre as part of President Tinubu’s vision to equip the FCT with world-class infrastructure.
He expressed confidence that these developments would significantly reduce travel times between satellite towns and the city centre, encourage residents to settle outside congested urban areas, and reverse the trend of rural-to-urban migration.
“It’s going to be transformative. People will no longer feel compelled to live in the crowded city centres,” the Minister added.
