The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has hinted that Gwagwalada and Bwari area councils will also get bus terminals to provide security for commuters moving from the satellite towns to the city centre.
The minister stated this on Saturday during a routine inspection of ongoing projects, including the International Conference Centre and the 12km Ushafa road.
The FCT Administration had in June 2024 flagged off the construction of three bus terminals in Kugbo, Mabushi and the Central Business District to curb the menace of one chance prevalent in the FCT.
Wike had said the terminals would enable the administration to identify and keep track of buses and taxis, as well as apprehend one-time criminals operating in the territory.
Speaking to journalists following the inspection on Saturday, the Minister added that
“Obviously, last time we went to Mabushi and Kugbo. Of course, we will have another one in the central area. We have agreed that we’re going to establish one in Gwagwalada and one in Bwari, so that you have people who will take you from Bwari down to the city, either you’re going to the Mabushi area or to the Kugbo bus terminal, or to the central business area bus terminal. The same thing applies to Gwagwalada.
“By the time we have done that, you can imagine that people will be safe, people will be secure. You can now go to any bus terminal, board a bus or a taxi, and go to where you’re going without having this problem of one chance.
“Except you on your own to decide to go on the road, to stay. In that case, the government has done what they are supposed to do, so it’s no longer our problem,” he said.
The Minister also expressed satisfaction with the pace of the ongoing projects, particularly the 12km Ushafa road, disclosing that his administration was also working to dualise the Kuje-Gwagwalada road.
He further stated that the projects lined up to mark the second anniversary of President Bola Tinubu in office will likely be commissioned in June after the Sallah celebrations, adding that he hoped the President would be able to visit at least two of the six Area Councils for the projects’ commissioning.
“I did say, we are monitoring the calendar… I suspect that it could be after the Sallah celebrations. So that we can have our own two weeks. All the projects will be commissioned by Mr. President. I mean, others will also do, like schools and the rest of them.
“But basically, the major ones that touch the satellite towns, and the major ones that touch the cities, we think that Mr. President will do. I pleaded with Mr. President, one or two of the roads in satellite towns, Mr. President should be able to go, so that the people will see Mr. President and appreciate him for the job that he has done,” he stated.
