The Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday morning, witnessed the first reading of a pivotal bill seeking the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State, into the Federal University of Technology, Offa.
The bill, officially titled Federal Polytechnics Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, is sponsored by Arc Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, Nigeria Deputy Senate and Senator Representing Kwara South Senatorial District.
The disclosure was made by Mr. Olayemi Olaboye (Itafa), the Special Adviser on Administration to the Senator.
According to him, “The Federal Polytechnics Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025 seeking the conversion of Federal Polytechnic Offa to Federal University of Technology Offa, and sponsored by Senator Ashiru, Yisa Oyelola (Kwara South) scaled the first reading at the Senate this morning.
“Recall that the same Bill was sponsored in the 9th Senate by Senator Ashiru and has been passed but couldn’t be accented by the former President Buhari before leaving office. The Bill has now been re-presented with a view to getting it passed and accented this time around.”
The proposed legislation aims to elevate the status of the Federal Polytechnic Offa.
This elevation will enable the institution to offer degree programmes and intensify its focus on technological innovation and research, in line with the national agenda for advancing science and technology.
If eventually passed and signed into law, the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Offa would be a landmark achievement, fulfilling a longstanding aspiration of the Offa community and the entire Kwara South region.
