In a tragic turn of events, Opesusi Faith Timilehin, a 19-year-old Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidate, has reportedly taken her own life after scoring 190 in the recently released Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) results.
The incident occurred in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, where Timilehin lived with her elder sister. According to The Guardian, she had previously sat for the same examination in 2024, achieving a higher score than her most recent attempt.
Eyewitnesses revealed that Timilehin visited her sister’s office after ingesting ‘Push Out’ rat poison at home. She reportedly asked for palm oil to relieve the pain caused by the poison. However, her sister, unaware of the cause of the discomfort, initially dismissed her request. Alarm was raised only after Timilehin confessed during the rush to the hospital that she had consumed poison.
The heartbreaking twist to the story came when it was discovered that Timilehin received an admission notice via her Gmail just 30 minutes after she was pronounced dead at Kolak Hospital, Odogunyan.
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is a computer-based test introduced by JAMB in 1978 for prospective undergraduates in Nigeria. This incident sheds light on the emotional toll of academic pressure and the need for stronger mental health support for students.
