The national leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has suspended the Chairperson of its Rivers State Council over alleged acts of misconduct and insubordination.
The decision was conveyed in a letter signed by TUC National President, Festus Osifo, and Secretary General, Nuhu Toro. According to the letter, the suspension stemmed from the Chairperson’s blatant disregard for the Congress’s protocols and procedures.
The embattled Chairperson was specifically accused of granting press interviews without authorization from the National Secretariat. This, according to the letter, persisted even after a query was issued to him on June 20, 2024, to which he responded with an apology. However, the leadership noted that despite his written apology, he continued to address the media, making inflammatory remarks that allegedly tarnished the image of the Congress.
In the letter addressed to the State Vice Chairperson, Hassan Anka, the TUC leadership expressed disappointment, describing the Chairperson’s conduct as detrimental to the unity and reputation of the Congress. It further stated that his actions left the national body with no choice but to reassess his role and commitment to the principles of the union.
As a result, the Chairperson has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect, pending further review by the national body. The TUC emphasized that the decision was taken in the best interest of the Congress and to maintain its integrity and public trust.
Further developments are expected as the Congress moves to address the issues raised in its investigation.
