The Federal Government has announced ongoing discussions aimed at repatriating 15,000 Nigerians stranded in Cameroon, Niger, Chad, and other parts of the world, ensuring their return is carried out with safety and dignity.
This was disclosed by Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday.
Ahmed noted that over six million people are currently displaced within Nigeria, while thousands of Nigerian refugees are scattered across various countries.
“We have 15,000 Nigerians that want to return to the country voluntarily. We also have not less than 100,000 foreigners living in this country as refugees. All these are the responsibilities of the commission, to give them support,” he stated.
He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support of the commission and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of displaced persons.
Ahmed further revealed that Nigeria is set to host the first thematic meeting under its chairmanship of the Rabat Process, with over 100 delegates from 57 partner countries expected to attend.
