President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the deployment of the National Identity Number (NIN) authentication system across all federal ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), signaling a major push toward digital governance and identity security.

The approval follows the launch of the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) new NIN Authentication platform—NINAuth—a secure, multi-channel system for identity verification.

In a statement released Tuesday, NIMC spokesperson Dr. Kayode Adegoke described NINAuth as a “cutting-edge suite of services” that includes web, API, and mobile tools for real-time verification. The platform aims to streamline access to government services while bolstering data security and privacy.

“This is the official channel for integrating with NIMC’s backend,” Adegoke said. “It adds a strong layer of protection and gives individuals greater control over their personal data.”

According to the commission, NINAuth will require explicit user consent before any personal information is shared for Know Your Customer (KYC) checks or other forms of verification—promoting transparency, trust, and user autonomy in Nigeria’s evolving digital identity landscape.
