The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State, James Melvin Ejeh, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Fulani herdsmen to vacate all farmlands in the area.
Ejeh delivered the directive during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the council secretariat in Obagaji. The meeting brought together traditional rulers, Fulani community leaders, youth representatives, and security officials to address mounting concerns over herders’ activities as the planting season approaches.
According to Obochi Solomon, Chief Press Secretary to the Agatu Chairman, Ejeh stressed the importance of safeguarding farming activities, noting that agriculture remains the backbone of Agatu’s economy. He emphasized that farmers must have unhindered access to their lands.
While acknowledging the relative peace currently enjoyed in Agatu, Ejeh maintained that uninterrupted farming must be prioritized. “Our farmers must cultivate without disruption. We will take all necessary steps to ensure a secure environment,” he affirmed.
During the meeting, the Ado of the Fulani requested a one-week extension to facilitate the herders’ relocation, a plea that was granted by the council.
Obochi added that the General Youth Chairman of Agatu LGA, Mr. Oloche Silas, pledged on behalf of the youths to support a peaceful evacuation and to avoid any acts of violence.
Representatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) commended the nonviolent handling of the issue and assured their support during the relocation process.
Also speaking at the meeting, Chief John Agidani, who represented the Och’Agatu, praised the Council Chairman’s leadership and called on all parties to uphold the terms of the agreement.
