Residents of communities along the Apete–Akufo Road in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State have called on Governor Seyi Makinde to construct speed breakers along the highway to prevent further road accidents.
The appeal follows a spate of crashes on the 12.5-kilometre concrete road, which was commissioned by Governor Makinde and serves more than 50 communities.
In a statement signed by Professor Onyekachi Ireanus Okoro, Deputy Provost of Comfort Estate, Araromi, the residents expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents caused by reckless driving, particularly by commercial motorcyclists and tipper truck drivers.
“The reckless driving habits of some road users continue to endanger the lives of residents, commuters, and pedestrians,” the statement read. “We respectfully urge the state government to install speed breakers along this road as a matter of urgency.”
Titled Urgent Call for Road Safety Measures, the statement stressed that the absence of speed control infrastructure has put the lives of residents at risk, and warned that without intervention, the frequency of accidents may rise.
“Speed control measures can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents. We believe the installation of speed breakers will help save lives and reduce the suffering of our people,” the statement continued.
The residents are hopeful that the government will respond swiftly to their appeal to ensure the safety of all road users.
