The Federal Government has announced the full closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos from April 27 to allow for urgent repair works.
Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, disclosed this on Monday during an inspection of the bridge.
Kesha explained that the bridge, which links the Ijora Causeway to Apapa, is undergoing a final phase of rehabilitation involving the replacement of approximately 50 damaged bearings beneath the bridge deck.
“This bridge has been awarded in phases. We are now at the final stage, which requires lifting the entire deck to replace faulty bearings,” she said.
She described the repair as critical, noting that while the bridge is not at risk of collapse, it has become unstable due to worn-out supports.
“If you drive on the bridge now, you will feel vibrations. That’s because the bearings — spring-like supports under the deck — have weakened significantly,” Kesha added.
Highlighting the bridge’s strategic importance as a gateway to Tincan and Apapa ports, Kesha acknowledged the likely inconvenience to commuters but stressed the necessity of the closure for public safety.
She appealed for patience and cooperation from motorists, assuring that the repair schedule would be strictly followed to minimize disruptions.
