The Kwara State Police Command has firmly denied reports alleging the presence of a terror group known as ‘Mahmuda’ operating within Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas of the state.
In a statement issued in Ilorin on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, described the claims — including that 15 vigilantes were killed by the group — as entirely false and without any factual backing.
“Our comprehensive and continuous threat assessments, intelligence surveillance, and tactical reconnaissance operations in these areas have yielded no evidence of insurgent activity, coordinated terrorist formations, or mass casualty incidents as described,” the statement read.
Ejire-Adeyemi emphasized that there has been no breach of internal security in the mentioned communities. She also noted that community leaders, including vigilante commanders and district heads, had not reported any such incidents, further discrediting the claims.
Acknowledging the complexities of cross-border movements around the Kainji Lake National Park, the command maintained that it has “effective situational control across all border communities.”
The statement urged members of the public and media organizations to avoid disseminating unverified reports that could incite panic.
Under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo, the Kwara State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to report any suspicious activity through official channels for swift action.
