The University of Ilesa (UNILESA), Osun State, has announced the death of Gbolahan Ojolo, a 100-level student of Business Administration, who was electrocuted during a thunderstorm on Friday, April 18, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the University Registrar, Mr. Funso Ojo, the tragic incident occurred while Ojolo was playing a game on his mobile phone, which was connected to a power source in his room at a private hostel near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction.

The university noted that the electrocution was reportedly triggered by a lightning strike during the storm.

“The Nigeria Police were immediately notified and have commenced a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement said. “Following police clearance, the deceased’s remains were deposited at the Wesley Guild Hospital morgue in Ilesa.”

The university also confirmed that the late student’s father was promptly informed and has since arrived in Ilesa, where he was received and comforted by senior university officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu; the Registrar; the Dean of Student Affairs; the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences; the Head of the Department of Business Administration; and the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force.

UNILESA expressed deep sorrow over the loss and assured that necessary support has been arranged for the bereaved family. The institution also called for prayers for the repose of Ojolo’s soul.
