The newly installed Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Isaac Adeyeye Haastrup, has issued a public notice regarding a traditional cleansing ritual to be held in Ilesa on Saturday, April 19.
In a statement shared via his official Facebook page, the monarch disclosed that the Erin people will carry out the age-old ritual, which controversially permits the stealing of livestock and looting of shops as part of the ceremony.
The announcement has sparked concern among residents, many of whom are questioning the relevance and legality of such practices in modern times.
Citizens have been strongly advised to secure their animals—including goats, cows, dogs, fowls, and cats—to avoid losing them during the procession.
Men are also cautioned against wearing any form of headgear, as ritual participants are expected to flog those who defy this custom.
The statement reads in part:
“Today, Saturday, April 19, the Erin people will perform the cleansing ritual rite in Ilesa, during which stealing of livestock and looting of shops is allowed as part of the cleansing rite. Residents are advised to keep their goats, dogs, fowls, cows, and cats away from the sight of the masquerade. In order to prevent being flogged by the ritualists, men should also refrain from wearing headgear.”
Security officials are yet to issue a formal response on how they intend to manage the situation.
