The Lagos State Government has shut down 13 markets in the Ketu-Mile 12 area for repeated violations of illegal waste disposal practices.
Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced the closures in a statement posted on his X handle on Friday. He emphasized that the measure is part of the state’s efforts to promote cleanliness and protect public health.
Wahab explained that the enforcement actions align with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, which aims to ensure proper waste management and uphold public order.
According to DAILY POST, the Ketu and Mile 12 markets were closed last night due to ongoing issues with waste disposal on roads, medians, and highways. These persistent violations prompted the government to take action to restore cleanliness and safety in these busy commercial areas.
The government has stressed that market stakeholders must now take full responsibility for managing waste properly to avoid further disruptions.
“These enforcement actions are crucial to protecting public health and restoring order in our public spaces,” Wahab stated.
