Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has announced a reduction in the curfew imposed on the Ilobu, Ifon, and Erin Osun communities following a recent communal clash. The 17-hour curfew has now been relaxed to 12 hours, effective from Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
The decision follows positive security reports indicating that a ceasefire is gradually taking hold in the affected communities. Governor Adeleke directed that the curfew will now run from 7 pm to 7 am daily until further notice.
In a statement issued by the Honorable Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, Governor Adeleke expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing peace efforts. He stated, “It gladdens my heart that peace is steadily returning to the affected communities. As the Governor and Chief Security Officer of Osun State, I am pleased to announce the relaxation of the curfew from 17 hours to 12 hours daily, effective today.”
The Governor reiterated his commitment to using all available means to resolve the communal conflict. He also commended the traditional rulers and the people of the three communities for their efforts in ensuring a return to peace, urging them to maintain the momentum.
The adjusted curfew timing is also intended to allow students preparing for exams, such as WAEC, NECO, and JAMB, to proceed with their studies and exams without disruption. Governor Adeleke emphasized the importance of safeguarding the future of the state’s youth.
Despite the relaxation of the curfew, the Governor instructed the joint security forces, including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, to continue round-the-clock surveillance to prevent any further unrest. He warned that any individual or group found instigating the crisis would be held accountable under Nigerian law.
Governor Adeleke also urged the 100-member crisis resolution committee formed earlier to expedite their work in finding a lasting solution to the communal tensions. He called on all stakeholders, including residents and those abroad, to cooperate with his administration in bringing an end to the crisis, emphasizing that only through peace and unity can the communities and the state as a whole achieve growth and development.
