The House of Representatives has taken a major step toward establishing the Federal College of Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition in Ntigha, Isiala Ngwa North, Abia State.
On Tuesday, a bill proposing the creation of the institution successfully passed its second reading during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abass.
Titled “A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal College of Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition, Ntigha, Isiala Ngwa North, Abia State, to Provide Full-time Courses, Teaching, Instruction, and Training in Technology, Applied Science, Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Management; and for Related Matters,” the proposed legislation seeks to address Nigeria’s growing youth unemployment crisis by equipping young people with practical skills for self-reliance.
Hon. Ginger Obinna Onwusibe, the bill’s sponsor, emphasized the urgent need for entrepreneurial education and vocational training, given the country’s overdependence on white-collar jobs.
He highlighted Ntigha’s strategic location, with easy access to key commercial hubs in the Southeast, as a prime location for the institution. The proposed college, he said, would focus on specialized training in agriculture, technology, manufacturing, and digital innovation, aligning with Nigeria’s economic diversification goals.
“This initiative will not only empower young people but also boost local industries, reduce poverty, and enhance national productivity,” Onwusibe stated.
He urged his colleagues to support the bill, noting that similar institutions have significantly contributed to economic transformation in other nations. “Nigeria must not be left behind,” he added. “The establishment of this college will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development.”
