The Kano State Government has set aside N8 billion for this year’s Ramadan feeding program, Governor Abba Yusuf announced.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony for 1,250 cartons of dates donated by Saudi Arabia, held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, on Friday, Yusuf—represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Farouk Ibrahim—expressed gratitude to the Saudi Consul-General in Kano, Khalil Adamawi. He noted that this was the fourth time the state had received such a donation.
A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, on Saturday highlighted the significance of the donation, especially in light of the economic hardship affecting citizens. Yusuf emphasized that the state government is making significant efforts to provide food for the less privileged during Ramadan.
He described Kano as the most peaceful state in Nigeria, which has attracted many people to settle there, increasing pressure on infrastructure and public services.
“This year’s Ramadan comes at a challenging time when Kano remains a haven of peace in northern Nigeria. The strain on the government, the people, and infrastructure is immense,” Yusuf stated.
The governor also appealed to the Saudi government to assist in building a psychiatric hospital and renovating the Displaced Children Camp to enhance care for vulnerable groups.
Reaffirming the strong relationship between Kano and Saudi Arabia, Yusuf pledged to strengthen ties for mutual benefit.
Commissioner for Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Kibiya, praised Saudi Arabia as a global leader in humanitarian efforts, thanking them for their continued support. Meanwhile, Saudi Consul-General Ahmad Adamawi reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to aiding Kano, commending the governor’s developmental projects in health, education, and infrastructure.
The donated dates were distributed to associations of people with disabilities, Islamic clerics, and other beneficiaries.
In a separate Ramadan message, Yusuf urged businesses to lower the prices of essential goods to help Muslims fully observe the holy month. He also called on citizens to support one another, particularly the vulnerable, and to focus on peace, worship, and prayers for the state’s prosperity.
