An early morning accident in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, claimed the lives of two transport workers on Friday.
The tragic incident occurred around 6 a.m. at a loading bay along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The victims, identified as a driver and a loader working for Anambra Comfort Line, were reportedly preparing for a trip to Lagos when a Lexus RX 350 lost control and crashed into the trunk of their parked Sienna vehicle.
An eyewitness recounted that the Lexus, driven by a young man with a female passenger, was speeding when it veered off course and rammed into the stationary vehicle, killing the two men instantly.
“Apart from these two who died on the spot, some others sustained injuries and have been rushed to the hospital,” the witness said. “Just this morning, we were joking and chatting after our morning prayers. It’s heartbreaking that they are now lying lifeless.”
He added that the driver and his female companion escaped unhurt and were later rescued from an angry mob. “The driver claims the accident was caused by brake failure, but we don’t believe that. There were no skid marks or signs that he tried to stop. We suspect he was either distracted, drunk, or drowsy—probably coming from a club.”
Tensions escalated as friends of the deceased attempted to attack the driver. It took the intervention of park owners and the police to prevent further violence. Authorities eventually secured the driver and his passenger in a room before police operatives smuggled them out of the area.
