Nigerian billionaire Folorunso Alakija has lost her eye sight completely, according to medical sources involved in her care.
Sources revealed to SaharaReporters that the 73-year-old founder and Executive Vice Chairman of Famfa Oil began experiencing health issues after a near air mishap.
It was reported that she was travelling with her husband, Modupe Alakija, Chairman of Famfa Oil, when the incident caused a spike in her blood pressure.
The distressing event is said to have affected her vision.
After the incident, Alakija reportedly purchased a new jet to avoid flying with her husband. However, her vision kept worsening until she eventually became completely blind.
The source said, “She had a near air mishap with her husband on board and her blood pressure reportedly shot up affecting her eyes. She has been having eyesight issues, but instead of treating the illness, she chose to start a church to help her. Now she can’t see.
Folorunso Alakija is a Nigerian billionaire businesswoman and philanthropist who started a small fellowship in her home around 2004, which later grew into the Rose of Sharon Glorious Ministry International. She was ordained as an apostle on her 69th birthday.
She is the founder of Famfa Oil, a Nigerian company with a major stake in OML 127, a highly lucrative oil block in the Agbami deep-water oilfield.
As of 2020, Forbes estimated her net worth at $1 billion. In 2015, she was ranked the 87th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes and was one of only two African women featured on Forbes’ list of Africa’s richest people.
The Alakija family is one of the wealthiest families in Nigeria.
Recall that Billionaire businesswoman Folorunsho Alakija was at the book launch of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB). Former Nigerian military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) launched his autobiography, A Journey in Service, on February 20, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
The event was attended by Nigeria’s political, business, and intellectual elite, including all living former leaders of the country—military and civilian alike—with the exception of immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, who sent a representative.
The launch also served as a fundraiser for the IBB Presidential Library Foundation. About N17.5billion was raised.
