Elder statesman Ayo Adebanjo will be laid to rest in his hometown of Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on May 3, 2025.
In a statement released by family members Ayotunde Ayo-Adebanjo, Adeola Azeez, and Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, the funeral proceedings will commence with a day of tributes and a service of songs at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. A wake is scheduled for Friday, May 2, 2025, at Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s country home in Isanya Ogbo.
The final burial service will occur at St. Philips Anglican Church, Isanya Ogbo, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Saturday, May 3, 2025, followed by a thanksgiving service at the same church on Sunday, May 4, 2025. The family has invited friends, relatives, and others to offer prayers and support for a dignified farewell.
Meanwhile, the Yoruba think-tank group Think Yoruba First (TYF) has emphasized the importance of Yoruba youths stepping up to assume leadership roles in light of Adebanjo’s passing. In a statement signed by its President, Kurunmi Kakanfo, the group highlighted Adebanjo’s life as a profound example for the younger generation.
They noted his dedication to Nigeria’s political landscape, stating, “Pa Adebanjo was a revered journalist, lawyer, and ‘Awoist’ who championed true federalism, democracy, and justice in Nigeria.”
The statement continued, “He was an active voice during colonialism as a member of the Action Group and a follower of the Great Sage Obafemi Awolowo. He played a crucial role in the fight for a return to democracy and true federalism as a prominent leader of NADECO, remaining vocal against military juntas and challenging successive civilian governments. His steadfast commitment to restructuring and the teachings of Awolowo extended into his later years, where he served as the acting leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere.”
“Pa Adebanjo’s legacy calls on young Yoruba to take up leadership roles and continue his struggle for a better Nigeria. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
