Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, is advocating for increased support for Ukraine as the country commemorates the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
“A free and sovereign Ukraine is vital for the entire world,” von der Leyen remarked ahead of her upcoming meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Monday.
With Ukraine’s budget deficit for 2025 now addressed, von der Leyen emphasized the pressing need to amplify military assistance.
“We must expedite the prompt delivery of weapons and ammunition,” she stated, revealing plans to soon introduce a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the EU’s arms production and defense capacities, which will also benefit Ukraine.
Additionally, von der Leyen announced further measures to bolster energy security for both Ukraine and the EU. She highlighted the goal of fully integrating the electricity markets of Ukraine and Moldova into the EU’s power grid by the end of next year.
“Our strong partnership serves both Ukraine’s and Europe’s interests,” she noted.
Von der Leyen, along with European Council President António Costa, is anticipated to visit Kyiv on Monday to reaffirm their support on this significant anniversary.
