Former military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has revealed that a soothsayer predicted in 1952 that Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) would one day become Nigeria’s head of state.
Speaking at an event, Abdulsalami reflected on his long-standing relationship with Babangida, which dates back nearly 80 years in Minna, Niger State.
He recalled that both he and Babangida were persuaded to join the military by then-Captain Yakubu Gowon, with the simple ambition of rising to the rank of captain before retiring. However, fate had other plans, as both eventually ruled Africa’s most populous nation as generals.
“Going down memory lane, while we were growing up in Minna around 80 years ago, a soothsayer told us in 1952 that IBB would become the head of state,” Abdulsalami said.
“We never took it seriously. Then, a young and smart Captain Gowon lured us into the military. Our only dream was to become captains and retire.
“But in His wisdom, God propelled us to the rank of generals, and by His grace, we both became heads of state.”
Gowon, Buhari Celebrate Babangida
Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon praised Babangida’s rise from aide-de-camp (ADC) to head of state, describing him as a “boss of bosses.”
Gowon also expressed deep gratitude to IBB for restoring his rank of General, which had been stripped from him after the 1976 coup.
“Thank you for restoring my rank,” Gowon said, acknowledging Babangida’s role in rehabilitating his military status after years of political turbulence.
Abdulsalami also commended Babangida for documenting his life story, emphasizing the historical significance of his memoir.
“Your memoir will enrich the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, former President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by ex-Transportation Minister Jaji Sambo, extended his congratulations to Babangida, expressing hope that he would continue advising Nigeria’s leadership.
