Court Orders Restoration Of Suspended Edo LG Chairmen

An Abakaliki Magistrates’ Court in Ebonyi has sentenced a 30-year-old man, Chekube Odom, to three years in prison for escaping from the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Centre.

Odom, whose address remains unknown, had been serving a sentence for theft and had two years left before his escape. He was charged with a single count of prison escape and pleaded guilty.

Police prosecutor Insp. Sabastine Alumona informed the court that Odom escaped on June 27, 2024, while participating in a routine clean-up.

“He was recaptured after committing another burglary and theft. When he was arrested and taken back to the correctional facility, the warders immediately recognized him as an escaped inmate,” Alumona stated.

The offence falls under Section 135 of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Vol. 1, of Ebonyi State, 2009.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Ezinne Uguru sentenced Odom to three years in prison.
