The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P) Joint Venture (JV) have successfully reduced routine flaring of Associated Gas (AG) by 96% in the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) fields.
According to NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, this milestone was achieved through the reinjection of AG into a designated underground storage reservoir at the Madu field, located in OML 85, offshore Bayelsa State. This strategy ensures that gas, which would have otherwise been flared, is now safely stored, significantly reducing environmental impact.
The initiative aligns with the regulatory framework of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), demonstrating the JV’s commitment to national environmental standards and global best practices.
NNPC Ltd’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, emphasized the company’s dedication to responsible resource management and optimizing production for both energy security and sustainability. He noted that the achievement reflects NNPC’s commitment to aligning operations with international environmental standards.
Similarly, First E&P’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, highlighted the company’s focus on environmental sustainability and responsible energy production. He stated that by significantly reducing its carbon footprint, the JV is contributing to a cleaner energy future that benefits both the environment and local communities.
Building on this success, Adeyemi-Bero added that the JV remains committed to commercializing the stored gas and other stranded gas resources within the Niger Delta.
