The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that the federal government is prepared to welcome approximately 5,144 Nigerians who may be deported by the United States government.
Reports indicate that these individuals, currently residing in the US without legal status, could be affected by the ongoing crackdown on undocumented immigrants initiated by President Donald Trump.
Speaking on the matter, NiDCOM Chairman/CEO Abike Dabiri-Erewa stated that an inter-agency committee has been established to manage the situation.
“The Federal Government has set up an inter-agency committee, comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), in case of a mass deportation of Nigerians from the US,” she said.
Trump prioritized mass deportations as a key campaign promise and has signed 21 executive orders aimed at reshaping US immigration policies. The administration’s border czar, Tom Homan, has been leading the enforcement operation, resulting in widespread arrests.
