The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that 73 people lost their lives in the tragic tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday at Dikko Junction, along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State.
The incident reportedly happened when a truck loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, lost control and caught fire, initially claiming at least 50 lives.
In an update on Sunday morning, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that 73 bodies had been recovered from the scene.
Reports indicate that the death toll may rise as several critically injured victims are currently fighting for their lives in various medical facilities.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has extended his condolences to the government and people of Niger State, describing the incident as a tragic loss.
The IGP emphasized the need for strict adherence to road safety protocols, warning against negligence and the disregard for regulations that often lead to such disasters. He has directed State Commissioners of Police to strengthen their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) in collaboration with other traffic management agencies to enforce compliance with traffic regulations on highways.
He also urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to abide by traffic rules to prevent further tragedies.
