…Enforcement to Begin February 1 – Police
The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has sought the collaboration of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure the enforcement of Third-Party Motor Insurance in the country.
This was highlighted during a courtesy visit by the Commissioner for Insurance/CEO of NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, Mr. Omosehin congratulated the IGP on his achievements, including the recent acquisition of a license for the Police Insurance Company.
He reiterated his earlier request for the Police’s assistance in enforcing all compulsory insurance policies, including Third-Party Motor Insurance, and pledged NAICOM’s support to facilitate seamless implementation.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns and training for police officers to ensure the initiative’s success.
In response, the IGP reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to enforcing the law, noting the compulsory nature of third-party motor insurance in Nigeria. He lamented that only 30% of vehicles in the country are currently insured, despite the legal requirement.
The IGP underscored the benefits of insurance coverage in safeguarding lives and property and urged motorists to obtain at least third-party insurance before driving on Nigerian roads. He further announced that the full enforcement of third-party motor insurance would begin on February 1, 2025.
The meeting was attended by key NAICOM officials, including the Deputy Commissioner for Technical, Dr. Usman Jankara; Deputy Commissioner for Finance and Administration, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon; Director of Legal, Enforcement & Market Development, Dr. Talmis Usman; Director of Inspectorate, Mr. Bankole Ajebola; senior police officers, and other stakeholders.
