The ongoing controversy surrounding the selection of the Alaafin of Oyo has taken a new turn as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) ramps up its investigation into allegations of bribery involving Prince Lukman Gbadegesin and the Oyo kingmakers.
The dispute stems from the selection process for the prestigious Alaafin stool, following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022. While several candidates vied for the throne, Gbadegesin’s candidacy has come under intense scrutiny amid allegations that he offered the kingmakers N15 million each to secure their support.
Two Oyomesi chiefs, Lamidi Oyewale and Asimiyu Atanda, reportedly admitted to the EFCC that the kingmakers accepted the bribe, which influenced their decision to declare Gbadegesin the preferred candidate. During court proceedings, EFCC counsel S.M. Galadanchi confirmed these admissions, adding weight to the allegations.
The controversy escalated after the Oyo State Government rejected Gbadegesin’s selection, citing procedural irregularities. Governor Seyi Makinde withheld approval of any candidate and called for a fresh selection process, further intensifying tensions in Oyo Town.
In response, five kingmakers, including the Basorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, accused the governor of overstepping his authority. They argued that his directive undermined an ongoing court case and declared the call for a new selection process illegal.
Adding to the turmoil are revelations of Gbadegesin’s financial troubles. Investigations uncovered a multimillion-naira debt scandal involving a N20 million loan he allegedly defaulted on, which grew to N48 million due to unpaid interest. A UK-based associate, Omosalewa Akinleye, accused Gbadegesin of issuing dud cheques in an attempt to settle the debt, further damaging his credibility.
The unfolding drama has sparked mixed reactions among Oyo residents. While some commend the EFCC’s intervention, others question the integrity of the entire selection process, lamenting the tarnished reputation of the Alaafin stool.
As investigations continue, the public awaits clarity on whether the throne will emerge from this cloud of controversy or remain mired in scandal. For now, all eyes are on the EFCC, the courts, and Governor Makinde’s next move.
