A recent outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in partOutbreakina has drawn global attention. Though HMPV was first identified in 2001 by Dutch researchers, it has likely existed in humans for centuries.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Mild Symptoms for Most: HMPV typically causes upper respiratory infections with symptoms like cough, fever, and nasal congestion, similar to the flu.

2. Transmission: The virus spreads through direct contact, respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, and contact with contaminated surfaces.

3. Seasonal Patterns: HMPV is seasonal, peaking in winter, and can cause epidemics during periods of high transmission.

4. High-Risk Groups: Young children under two and individuals with weakened immune systems, including the elderly, are most vulnerable.

5. No Vaccine or Cure: There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine. Preventative measures include maintaining good hygiene, avoiding contact with infected individuals, and wearing masks.

Health experts stress that HMPV is not a new virus-like COVID-19 but a long-recognized respiratory illness affecting nearly every child by age five.
