The Anambra State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives following a stampede at a rice-sharing event in Okija town, Ihiala Local Government Area, on Saturday.
Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, through a press release issued by his press secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures during charitable activities, particularly those involving the distribution of food items to the less privileged.
The press release stated:
“In his expression of sympathy, Governor Soludo extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, including women, the elderly, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident.
“The State Government calls on all individuals and organizations engaging in charitable activities to prioritize the safety and well-being of beneficiaries. This tragedy highlights the urgent need for more structured and secure distribution processes.”
The statement acknowledged that the Obi Jackson Foundation, led by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, organized the event with noble intentions to assist the less privileged during the festive season.
The government has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine its root causes and identify any lapses in safety protocols. Governor Soludo assured the public that necessary actions would be taken to prevent future occurrences.
The directives for future distributions include:
Conducting distributions in an organized and decentralized manner to avoid overcrowding at a single location.
Establishing multiple distribution points within communities.
Prioritizing vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women, children, and people with disabilities.
Employing trained personnel to manage crowds, ensure orderly queues, and assist beneficiaries.
Launching public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on safety measures during such events.
The government reiterated its commitment to working with relevant agencies to ensure that safety remains paramount during any charitable activity.
