To promote culture and tourism while honouring the rich traditions of the Igbo people, the Enugu State Government has introduced a striking Ijele masquerade metal sculpture at Onuasata Roundabout, Obiagu, Enugu.
During the unveiling ceremony, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, praised Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah for his extensive infrastructural developments, which he believes are revitalizing the city’s status as the heart of Ndigbo and the broader former Eastern Region.
Achebe emphasized that the sculpture embodies the profound cultural heritage of the Igbo people, highlighting the Ijele masquerade as a treasured and prestigious symbol within the culture. He noted that Ijele is revered among all masquerades in Igbo land and is associated with themes connected to humanity.
“Undoubtedly, Enugu is the capital of Igbo land by divine design. Therefore, any initiative that enhances Enugu’s greatness is of paramount importance to every Igbo person, which is why I am here,” he declared.
“The Ijele masquerade is the largest of all masquerades, specific to Anambra and Enugu States. Its significance is deeply rooted in our identity, encompassing all aspects of human existence, with endless tales—hence its distinction as the largest.
“We extend our gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah, who is also a representation of Ijele, for enabling this opportunity and for transforming our state and Igboland into a more beautiful and vibrant place,” the esteemed royal said.
