Justice Josiah Majebi, the Chief Judge of Kogi State, has announced the release of 27 inmates from six correctional facilities in the state, where they had been held due to their inability to pay fines and compensations.

This initiative was made possible through the efforts of the non-governmental organization, Victory Idewele Foundation, which covered the fines and compensations for the inmates during the Chief Judge’s visit to the correctional centres from Monday to Wednesday.

At the Koton-Karfe Maximum Security Correctional Centre, two inmates were released: Mustapha Idris, who was fined N50,000, and Kehinde Amaka, who had served one year in prison with a financial penalty of N300,000. Although Amaka benefited from the foundation’s assistance, he must remain in custody until January 15, 2025, to complete his sentence.

Additionally, 20 inmates were released from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kabba, while five inmates were freed in Ankpa.

During his visit, Justice Majebi emphasized the importance of ensuring no inmate is unjustly detained and cautioned magistrates against becoming instruments of oppression. He expressed concern over the delays caused by some prosecutors, which result in awaiting trial inmates spending excessive time in custody.

The Chief Judge praised Victory Idewele Foundation’s contributions, stating, “This visit is historic as no such initiative has occurred during prior corrections facility visits in our state.”

He shared that before this visit, Hon. Halidu Adejo, the Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, had introduced Mr. Innocent Idewele, who expressed his desire to help inmates regain their freedom by paying their fines. The total outstanding fines amounted to ten million Naira, which the foundation paid to the Kogi State government.

Furthermore, the foundation provided transportation for all released inmates and pledged to take them to Abuja for skill acquisition training, along with provisions for accommodation, meals, and starter packs upon completion of the program.

The Chief Judge acknowledged the efforts of the Idah Local Government Chairman for his concern regarding the local custodial centre and encouraged other local government leaders to follow suit for the betterment of the state.

Innocent Idewele, the founder of the Victory Idewele Foundation, remarked that the NGO is dedicated to transforming lives, particularly those of the less privileged, and stressed that addressing citizens’ needs should not solely be the responsibility of the government.
