As a student journalist striving to uncover untold stories, being recognized as a finalist in the Campus Journalism Awards (CJA) is a significant achievement. The competition is fierce, requiring a unique storytelling style and dedication to reporting special and untold stories. The CJA, founded by Mallam Gidado Yushau Shuaib, provides a platform for young journalists to showcase their talents and celebrate their accomplishments at a national level.
My passion for journalism was ignited in 2020, driven by a desire to share impactful stories. The CJA award is a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication, as it recognizes the hard work and talent of aspiring journalists.
In the words of investigative journalist Efosa Taiwo, “The world is waiting to read your story.” Journalism is a profession that requires continuous learning and growth, and every aspiring journalist must be willing to adapt and improve their skills.
Despite facing challenges and setbacks, my determination to succeed in journalism has never wavered. After multiple attempts, I was finally selected as a finalist and awarded the title of Best Reporter of the Year in 2024. This achievement has opened doors for me to network, gain exposure, and further explore the field of journalism.
Overall, my journey in journalism has been a rewarding experience, filled with learning opportunities and personal growth. I am grateful for the recognition and look forward to continuing my pursuit of excellence in storytelling.
*My Experience at CJA*
Although no knowledge is wasted, no matter how small it is, since you’re able to gain something out of it, it will serve as additional knowledge to what you had before, and by then, you can claim it as yours.
Being among the finalists this year was one of the greatest feats for me, while having the opportunity to travel from my location to the event was another dream come true. It wasn’t easy, though, because not everyone who was shortlisted was able to be there. So, my experience in Abuja was filled with joy at the end.
On the 6th of December, I left Ilorin for Abuja to celebrate myself as a campus journalist whose work was acknowledged at the national level, not as the winner of any category, but the story turned around on the event day as I was named the best Reporter of the year. It was a moment of joy and happiness because I had no idea of winning the category, let alone being celebrated to that extent. I thank God because it was what I had been praying for.
Of course, while heading to Abuja, there was an email sent to us that we should write 500 words on a topic, and the deadline was included, giving everyone a tough time. The moment I saw the email, I swung into work and prepared it before the submission deadline. Upon reaching there, I was able to connect with like-minded journalists whom I had been in a long-distance relationship with before. I was glad to network with them in person, chat, and expose each other to one or two things, especially Abubakar Abdulrasheed, Hussain Abdulwahab Kehinde, Habeeb Olokoba, Abdulrasheed Akere, and Isaq Ibrahim, who have been my mentors over the years, and now we all met in person.
The next day was a workshop and defense day. It was a day where all finalists would be in front of expert journalists who would teach us the dos and don’ts of journalism, explain the roles to take, and make journalism more interesting for us to delve deeper into it. Then, we faced the panel where everyone would defend their work, regardless of whether it resonated with the headline given to us or not. In this aspect, everyone’s defense would count, and it would be used to choose the best campus journalist of the year. It was not by power, but your prowess in communication and defending your article would easily help you out. Everyone made it to this level, defended their article, and scored, but no one would know who the panel would choose until the award ceremony.
At the event where everyone was expected to hear their name as the winner of their category and the best journalist of the year, I was called and celebrated as the Reporter of the year, and others were celebrated as winners of their categories too. Sharafadeen Ahmed Sawe was selected as the best campus journalist of the year, making him the man of the year by CJA 2024. It was an unforgettable experience full of exposure, criticism, and networking, which was the reason why I enjoyed the event and wished I could be there to win the best campus journalist of the year next year if possible. But to be honest, the experience was beyond one’s imagination.
Meanwhile, during my two years in the media space as a journalism student, I have grown, progressed, and established my identity. My name has become known in places I have never physically been because I chose journalism as my field of study. Being a journalist requires playing critical roles, regardless of your passion for the profession. To succeed and gain recognition, dedication and readiness to face challenges are essential.
In fact, the journalists you admire today started from the same place you are now. Their hard work, dedication, and continuous learning allowed them to exceed their expectations and gain recognition. Building a successful journalism career takes time and effort. To become a professional writer or journalist like those you admire, you must work hard, attend workshops, and embrace new learning opportunities. This will help you establish your presence in the media industry, despite its competitiveness.
In conclusion, the field of journalism is competitive, but your unique skills can set you apart. Always be willing to learn, unlearn, and relearn to strengthen your identity. As a student journalist aiming for success in the journalism field, remember to prioritize objectivity, accuracy, fairness, accountability, and transparency. By following these principles and seeking guidance from experienced professionals, you can avoid setbacks and quickly establish your identity in the industry.
