U.S. President Joe Biden has announced plans to engage with “all Syrian groups” to support a political transition in the country following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad.
The Assad regime was overthrown by Islamic rebels over the weekend, marking a major turning point in Syria’s 13-year civil war. The rebels seized control of Damascus on Sunday, effectively ending the Assad family’s decades-long grip on power.
Speaking from the White House, Biden described the regime’s collapse as a “moment of historic opportunity” for the Syrian people. He confirmed that his administration would collaborate with all factions, including those involved in the United Nations-led process, to pave the way for a sovereign Syria under a new constitution.
When asked about Assad’s future, Biden stated, “Assad should be held accountable.” Reports suggest the former leader has fled to Russia.
“The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice,” Biden said. “This is a historic moment for the long-suffering people of Syria, and it offers a chance to rebuild their nation free from tyranny.”
