Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has dismissed claims that the controversial tax reform bills are designed to favor Lagos. Speaking at the Africa Investment Forum Market Days 2024 in Morocco on Wednesday, he clarified that the reforms are aimed at improving governance, not benefitting any single state disproportionately.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the reforms would instill discipline and require all stakeholders to work harder to realize their full potential.
“Change requires sacrifice,” he stated. “As the saying goes, you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. People need to take time to understand the provisions of the reform thoroughly. There’s been speculation that Lagos stands to gain the most, but this isn’t true. In some areas, Lagos may even see reductions. However, on a broader scale, these reforms will strengthen governance structures and improve efficiency.”
He continued, “We all need to step up. These reforms demand greater effort from everyone, and the benefits won’t come easily. Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio is one of the lowest in the world, so reforms like these are necessary. The intention is not to harm anyone but to create opportunities and improve conditions for everyone.”
Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about the reforms, describing them as a positive step forward. “This is not about bettering the fortunes of a single individual or group. It’s for all of us. We should approach it with an open mind and a sense of collective purpose.”
