Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced plans to restore the long-abandoned King’s Square (Ring Road) Water Fountain in Benin City, a multi-million naira project originally built during the administration of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
Governor Okpebholo shared this during an inspection of the facility, emphasizing his commitment to bringing the once-vibrant attraction back to life. The fountain, which used to draw thousands of visitors, especially during festive seasons, has been left in a state of neglect for eight years due to lack of maintenance under the previous administration.
Constructed as part of an urban renewal initiative by Oshiomhole’s administration, the Water Fountain was completely abandoned by the Godwin Obaseki-led government, resulting in significant deterioration.
During his visit, Governor Okpebholo highlighted the importance of restoring the site for the enjoyment and benefit of Edo residents.
“I came here to assess the condition of the Water Fountain, a project initiated by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s administration but neglected by the Godwin Obaseki administration,” he stated. “I remember how beautiful this place was during Oshiomhole’s tenure. My goal is to revive it, clean it up, and transform it back into a recreational space for Edo people.”
He expressed optimism about the restoration, noting that the facility could once again serve as a hub for relaxation and family outings on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
“This place has been abandoned for far too long, but my administration is determined to restore it for the enjoyment of Edo families,” Governor Okpebholo concluded.
