Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has sworn in three judges—Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe—who were previously rejected by the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Festival Hall of the Government House, follows the earlier inauguration of five judges in May this year. Governor Okpebholo described the event as fulfilling a promise he made during his inauguration to correct the oversights of the past.
The Governor explained that the National Judicial Council (NJC) had recommended eight individuals for appointment as judges of the Edo State High Court in June 2023. However, only five were sworn in by the previous administration, leaving three cleared and recommended candidates excluded.
He emphasized that no individual should face discrimination, marginalization, or exclusion based on personal grievances or lack of political patronage. Okpebholo also underscored the judiciary’s pivotal role under the doctrine of Separation of Powers, reiterating his commitment to strengthening the judiciary in Edo State.
“During my swearing-in as Governor of Edo State on November 12, 2024, I highlighted the judiciary’s crucial role within the framework of Separation of Powers. Today, we strengthen that role,” Governor Okpebholo stated.
He continued: “The NJC, in June 2023, recommended eight persons for appointment as judges of the Edo State High Court. Eleven months later, only five were sworn in by the past administration, despite all eight being cleared and recommended.
“In my inaugural speech, I promised to address this issue. Today, we have the privilege to rectify the wrong. These three judges now join their colleagues on the bench of the Edo State High Court to serve as beacons of hope.
“No one should be discriminated against, marginalized, or excluded for personal reasons or due to lacking a godfather. As judges, we expect you to uphold high standards, ensure fair dispute resolution, protect citizens’ rights, and deliver justice impartially.”
Speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in judges, Ojo Maureen Osa expressed gratitude to the Governor for the opportunity to serve. She pledged their commitment to delivering justice without fear or favour and prayed for the success of the Governor’s administration in fostering justice for all.
