Despite strong opposition from some Northern leaders, Islamic cleric and scholar Ahmad Abubakar Gumi has described the controversial Tax Reform Bills as a beneficial package for all Nigerians.

The bills have faced criticism from Northern governors, lawmakers, and traditional leaders, who argue that their implementation could lead to economic hardship in the region. This disagreement has fueled tensions between Southern and Northern stakeholders.

The debate around the bills reignited last Thursday when they passed their second reading in the upper legislative chamber.

Speaking on the issue, Gumi told our correspondent on Tuesday that the proposed tax reforms are broadly positive. However, he emphasized that the Value Added Tax (VAT) provision, which has been the most contentious aspect of the bills, requires further review.

Addressing the controversy, Gumi stated: “I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all.”
