Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has called on the National Assembly (NASS) to ensure objectivity and transparency in its public hearing on the Tax Reform Bills.
In a post on X, the former Vice President emphasized the importance of open and inclusive participation by all stakeholders, urging NASS to prioritize the interests of Nigerians in the final content of the proposed legislation.
“I have followed the intense public discourse on the Tax Reform Bills with keen interest,” Atiku stated. “Nigerians are united in their call for a fiscal system that promotes justice, fairness, and equity. The system must not deepen existing inequalities by favoring a few states while penalizing others.”
He underscored the need for transparency in the legislative process, adding that it is crucial for fostering accountability, good governance, and public trust. Atiku urged NASS to ensure the public hearing involves a broad range of stakeholders, including civil society organizations, traditional institutions, politicians, public officials, and subject matter experts.
Atiku also called for the resolutions of the National Economic Council (NEC) to be revisited and made public, noting that the NEC plays a key advisory role on economic matters. He stressed that the outcomes of the legislative process should align with the interests of the majority of Nigerians.
“The NASS must be appropriately guided to ensure that the final provisions of the Bills reflect the collective interests and aspirations of the people,” he concluded.
