Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi from Gombe State has been elected as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) during the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference held in Owerri, Imo State.
Abdullahi emerged victorious with a commanding 436 votes, defeating Dele Atunbi of the FCT Council, who secured 97 votes, and Muhammed Garba of the Kaduna Council, who received 39 votes.
The new NUJ President, a journalist with Gombe Media Corporation (GMC) and former National Deputy President of the NUJ, succeeds Chris Isiguzo.
In addition, Mrs. Abimbola Oyetunde, a Deputy Director at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), was elected unopposed as the Deputy National President.
In his acceptance speech, Abdullahi pledged to prioritize the welfare of NUJ members, defend press freedom, and promote high journalistic standards. He emphasized the need for collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the safety and rights of journalists.
“My administration will focus on capacity-building initiatives, including workshops, training, and mentorship programs to enhance our members’ skills,” he said.
He also outlined plans to harness technology and innovation to adapt to the rapidly evolving media landscape while strengthening networks among journalists and media organizations. Abdullahi called for partnership with government agencies, civil society, and media owners to foster a supportive environment for journalism to thrive in Nigeria.
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, congratulated Abdullahi on his election, describing it as a remarkable achievement for the state and the journalism community.
In a statement by his spokesman, the governor praised Abdullahi’s dedication and leadership qualities. “Your journey from the chapel level to national leadership has been marked by courage, integrity, and passion for journalism,” he said.
Governor Yahaya assured Abdullahi of Gombe State’s unwavering support, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the NUJ into a new era of progress and professionalism.
“Your victory is not just a win for the NUJ but a testament to the values of leadership, determination, and excellence that you embody,” the governor concluded.
The election marks the beginning of what many hope will be a transformative era for the NUJ under Abdullahi’s leadership.
