Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State yesterday inaugurated 10 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses provided by the Federal Government to ease transportation challenges for workers in the North West region.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Secretariat in Kano, was hailed by the governor as a significant step towards reducing commuting costs for workers. He praised President Bola Tinubu for the initiative, emphasizing its importance in addressing the economic challenges faced by workers.
Governor Yusuf announced plans to convert 30 luxury buses in the state to CNG and establish CNG service centres as part of efforts to alleviate the effects of rising fuel prices. He also commended the support of labour unions in Kano and reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.
Speaking at the event, NLC President Joe Ajaero highlighted that the CNG buses are part of the Federal Government’s strategy to mitigate the financial impact of the removal of fuel subsidies on workers. He urged the government to continue protecting workers from economic hardships and called for the establishment of more CNG service centres in the region.
Ajaero also commended Governor Yusuf for implementing the new minimum wage in Kano, reaffirming the NLC’s support for policies that improve workers’ livelihoods.
