Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, has revealed a construction defect in the remodelled 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital, a project completed by the previous administration under Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Dr. Oshiomhole made this known during an inspection tour of the hospital in Benin City. Accompanied by medical consultants and the contractor responsible for the project, he stated that the team had identified the defect and agreed on measures to address the issue.
“I inspected the Stella Obasanjo Hospital alongside consultants and the project contractor to assess the facility. During the inspection, we discovered errors made in the construction process,” Oshiomhole said.
“We discussed extensively to determine the best solutions, and the team agreed on adjustments to correct the defects before the hospital becomes operational. Collaboration with experts, including gynaecologists, surgeons, and medical consultants, has been key in identifying and resolving these issues,” he added.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of teamwork in addressing the problem and expressed confidence in the contractor and consultants’ commitment to making the necessary corrections.
Other officials who joined the inspection included the Permanent Secretary of the Hospital Management Agency, Dr. Efosa Aisien; Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Odiko David; and Director of Medical Laboratory Services, Omuera Francis, among others.
The Daily Post recalls that the remodelled hospital was commissioned on November 6, 2024, by Dame Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The event marked the culmination of Governor Obaseki’s two terms in office.
The ceremony was attended by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in honor of his late wife, Stella Obasanjo, for whom the hospital was named by former Governor Chief Lucky Igbinedion when it was originally established in 2007.
