The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has publicly disassociated itself from Simon Ekpa, who claims to be the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Government in Exile (BGIE). Ekpa was recently arrested in Finland alongside four others for alleged terror-related activities.
According to Finnish police, Ekpa is under investigation for “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent,” while the other suspects face charges related to financing terrorism. The authorities allege that Ekpa used his social media platforms to incite violence in southeastern Nigeria, leading to attacks on civilians and authorities.
Reacting to the arrest, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful issued a statement clarifying that Simon Ekpa is not and has never been a member of IPOB.
IPOB’s Statement on Simon Ekpa
IPOB emphasized that its organization, founded by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is a peaceful movement committed to achieving Biafra’s independence through non-violent means such as civil disobedience and a United Nations-supervised referendum. The group accused Ekpa of undermining their efforts, claiming he created a violent group known as the Biafra Liberation Army under the banner of the BGIE.
“Simon Ekpa has never been a member of IPOB, nor does he represent IPOB in any capacity,” the statement read. “He has instead led a campaign of violence and terror that IPOB strongly condemns. His activities, including recruiting criminal gangs, have caused harm to civilians in the South-East region and tarnished the legitimate Biafra self-determination struggle.”
Allegations Against Simon Ekpa
IPOB accused Ekpa of working with malicious intent to disrupt the peace in the South-East region of Nigeria. The group alleged that the BGIE and its affiliated groups, such as the Biafra Liberation Army, have been involved in numerous violent acts, including kidnappings, killings, and destruction of property.
The group further asserted that Ekpa’s actions are part of a larger conspiracy aimed at discrediting IPOB’s peaceful efforts for Biafran independence. “Neither IPOB nor any of its units worldwide has any alliance or affiliation with Simon Ekpa and his group,” the statement clarified.
IPOB’s Call to Authorities
IPOB called on international authorities, particularly the Finnish government and the BBC, to refrain from associating Ekpa with their movement. They reiterated their commitment to peaceful advocacy and distanced themselves from any violent activities attributed to Ekpa and his group.
“Simon Ekpa’s violent agenda does not represent IPOB or its objectives. IPOB will continue to push for Biafran sovereignty through peaceful and legitimate means,” the statement concluded.
IPOB also urged its members and supporters to remain focused on their core mission and not be distracted by Ekpa’s activities or the recent developments surrounding his arrest.
