President Bola Tinubu has landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20).
Arriving on Sunday at 11:03 p.m. local time (3:03 a.m. Monday in Nigeria), Tinubu was received by Amb. Breno Costa of Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations. His delegation includes Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture and Creativity Hannatu Musawa, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, and Director General of the National Intelligence Agency Amb. Mohammed Mohammed.
During the summit, President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral meetings on advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms.
The event, hosted by Brazilian President Lula da Silva from November 18–19, features the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.” Discussions will center on economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, global governance reforms, food security, climate change, and the principles of the digital economy.
The Israeli–Hamas war and growing geopolitical tensions between the United States and China are also priority issues for the Brazilian presidency.
Representatives from 19 G20 member countries, the African Union, and the European Union will attend. Da Silva has outlined a three-point agenda focused on combating hunger, poverty, and inequality while aiming to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030.
