Mutiu Akinbami, a former councillor of Abeokuta North Local Government Area, was shot dead by gunmen believed to be cultists on Friday evening around the Brewery area of Abeokuta, Ogun State. The brutal attack occurred while Akinbami, known as Egor, was riding a motorcycle with his son.

The incident took place at approximately 6:30 PM between the popular Brewery Bus Stop and Olomoore Junction. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, who had apparently been tracking Akinbami from his residence in the Olomoore Federal Housing Estate, arrived in a tinted Toyota Hilux and opened fire as they caught up with their target.

SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State police, confirmed the incident in a statement released to the press. According to Odutola, the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa received a report around 6:40 PM regarding the shooting. The report noted that Akinbami was fired upon from behind by a masked occupant of an unregistered white tinted Hilux while he was riding home.

Police swiftly mobilized patrol teams to the scene, and Akinbami was transported to Ijaiye General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Preliminary investigations revealed that Akinbami was a known member of the Eiye confraternity and had previously held a high-ranking position at the Federal College of Education, Osiele, in Abeokuta. He had also been listed as a wanted person.

Authorities stated that several arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing to uncover further details. This tragedy follows another recent incident, where the All Progressives Congress councilorship candidate for Abeokuta South, Adeleke Adeyinka, was also killed by suspected cultists last month.
