The Ogun State Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps, has successfully disrupted a self-kidnap plot allegedly orchestrated by 41-year-old Enitan Awoyemi, who sought to evade a N1 million debt.
According to a statement issued by Brigadier General Alade Adedigba (retd.), the Commander of Amotekun, Awoyemi, a resident of Irolu-Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area, fabricated his abduction to avoid repaying gambling debts. On November 10, his wife, Mrs. Tope Awoyemi, reported to the Amotekun Irolu outpost that her husband had called her, claiming to have been kidnapped by unknown individuals demanding a ransom of N5 million for his release.
Following the report, the Amotekun Intelligence team launched an investigation, which uncovered Awoyemi’s substantial gambling-related debts totaling approximately N1 million. Known for his frequent gambling, Awoyemi had previously won N6 million, spending part of it on a Toyota Corolla Sport and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle for commercial use. Unable to settle his debts, he resorted to faking his own kidnapping.
Amotekun officers, in collaboration with the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and local stakeholders, tracked Awoyemi to Ijagba town and subsequently to Ota in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area. He was apprehended early Wednesday at Irolu Okada Park during routine patrols. Upon capture, officers detected a strong odor of insecticide, raising concerns of a potential suicide attempt, and he was swiftly taken to Rufina Private Hospital in Iperu for medical attention.
Brigadier General Adedigba affirmed that Awoyemi would face legal consequences following his recovery. “Once he is discharged from the hospital, he will be handed over to the police for further proceedings,” he stated.
The Amotekun Commander commended the community’s collaboration that led to the suspect’s apprehension, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. “This incident underscores the importance of community cooperation in ensuring safety and security,” Adedigba emphasized.
