How does one adequately pay tribute to a master of words? Though I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting him in person, I have often watched him on television, where he skilfully dissects complex issues with clarity and precision, captivating audiences with his articulate, insightful commentary. His written work, featured in Nigeria’s leading newspapers and many reputable academic journals across the world, is equally impressive. It showcases a remarkable ability to form well-reasoned opinions and express them eloquently. His sharp analytical mind and command of language have rightfully earned him widespread respect and admiration. From a young age, he exhibited remarkable discipline and determination in his educational journey, consistently aiming for the highest standards. His relentless pursuit of excellence inspired his father to support his dreams wholeheartedly, even in the face of adversity. His academic path began with exceptional achievements, culminating in a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in Law from the University of Lagos in 1986.
During his time there, he earned prestigious awards, including the Dean’s Prize for the most outstanding student and the Prince Bola Ajibola Prize, as well as top honours in Banking and Insurance Law and Public International Law. His dedication to scholarship did not end with his undergraduate studies. He continued to excel, earning a Master of Laws (LLM) with Distinction in 1996 and a Master’s in Public Administration and International Affairs (MPIA) with Distinction in 2010, both from the University of Lagos. Each of these achievements reflects his unwavering commitment to academic excellence and intellectual rigour. Even before university, his quest for excellence was evident. At Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin, he distinguished himself as the top graduate in his class, earning an impressive array of distinctions in four subjects. This achievement is a testament to his hard work and intellectual prowess. It was not an isolated incident but rather a continuation of a successful academic journey that began at Ansar-Ud-Deen College in Offa, where he stood out among his peers as one of the few students to graduate with distinction. This showcased both his diligence and commitment to excellence.
During his time at Ansar-Ud-Deen College, he became widely known by the nickname “Kekere Alayo,” a tribute to his exceptional skills in table tennis. His talent on the table tennis court garnered him admirers and highlighted his competitive spirit and dedication to mastering his interests. By the time he graduated from secondary school in 1981, Kekere Alayo had already mapped out a clear and ambitious vision for his future—an impressive feat that many of his classmates could only dream of. Amid the numerous challenges that students face on their educational journeys—often feeling at the mercy of fate or external circumstances—the inspiring story of this young boy stands out as a beacon of hope. His father, Baba Shittu, was a dedicated vulcanizer from Ile Olokuku in Akingbasa, and his mother, affectionately known as Iya Alate, was an industrious petty trader from Ile Ajibogun in Essa Ward, Offa.
Together, they exemplify the profound impact of determination, unwavering focus, and proactive effort on their son’s life. Their story not only reveals the struggles they overcame but also highlights the transformative potential that arises when parents choose to pave a path for their children through resilience and tenacity.
