Philanthropy, defined as altruistic concern for human welfare through donations of money, property, or work, seems scarce in our environment. MOK, was synonymous with philanthropy in Offa, stood out not as the wealthiest but due to unparalleled generosity.
In a country boasting at least 400 private jets, widespread wealth coexists with societal challenges. Despite numerous millionaires on Forbes, why do we still rely on foreigners like Bill Gates for significant contributions, questioning the impact of local affluence?
Celebrating those who exploit funds is detrimental; generosity should stem from genuine concern, not for titles or applause. Investing illicit gains abroad instead of in our country deprives us of economic benefits.
A society of wealthy individuals lacking in generosity is detrimental, contributing to a high unemployment rate. If the affluent empowered others, creating a chain effect, the economic impact would be immense.
Empowerment is more than handouts; it involves meaningful initiatives. Addressing societal issues requires commitment, not exploiting vulnerabilities or perpetuating harmful cycles.
Government officials should lead by example, considering measures like Malawi’s President, Joyce Banda, who sold excesses to benefit the economy. Politicians should engage in consistent charity, not just during elections.
Muyideen Okunlola Kayode, flawed yet philanthropic, serves as a model. Despite criticism, his gestures inspired contentment, contrasting with pretentious acts of some politicians. Genuine generosity, as seen in MOK, cannot be feigned or forced.
In a society with selfish and arrogant figures, MOK’s authenticity stands out. Whether comfortable or struggling, encountering him brought contentment, a true gift from God.
