A motorcyclist, Afeez Mustapha, was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a female passenger in Ogun State.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest in a statement.
According to the statement, Mustapha was conveying the female passenger to a destination when he suddenly changed direction, taking a different route than the one the passenger had requested. He then took advantage of the lone victim and allegedly perpetrated the crime in a desolate location.
The police have taken Mustapha into custody and transferred him to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. The authorities are taking the matter seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation to gather evidence and determine the facts of the case.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of passengers, particularly women, who use commercial motorcycles as a mode of transportation. The police are urging anyone with information about the incident or similar cases to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The statement from the police read: “Commercial motorcycle rider arrested for rape on May 9, 2024. One Afeez Mustapha is in SCID for sexual assault of a female passenger, after diverting to a route different from that of the passenger.”
